Marlene Foard's Summer 09 Rufous from Star Meadows Montana flipped

Season Summary as of 9/21/06
31 hummingbirds in 21 counties -- 10 Banded

Allegheny Co. -- Probable R/A Hummer in Penn Hills
not banded -- FO 11/3/05 ↔ LO 11/17/05

A caller to Scott Shalaway's radio show 'Birds and Nature' on Sat. 11/19 named "Bob from Penn Hills" reported that because his wife was ill, they failed to take down their hummer feeder at the end of October as usual. So, of course, they got a late hummer as a reward! The bird arrived on Thursday 11/3 and fed at the feeder all throughout the day until for an unknown reason the decision was made to remove the feeder on Thursday 11/17. After the feeder was removed, the hummer returned and was seen hovering at the feeder location. After the feeder was rehung, the bird fed and was not seen again. No good description was given of this bird, but I'm going to presume that it was NOT an RTHU!

Centre Co. -- Green Violet-ear in State College
(not banded) - FO 8/?/05 ↔ LO 8/?/05

"Somewhere in Centre County, in very early August, an unusual hummingbird was seen several times in a backyard. It was mostly green, substantially larger than the many Ruby-throats present, and one person is confident of seeing a decurved bill. Four people saw the bird, all with at least some birding experience, and agreed absolutely it was not a Ruby-throat." (Greg Grove on PABIRDS)

In June 2011, prompted by the report of a GRVE in Kansas, there was a renewed discussion of the Centre Co hummer on PABirds. Scott Weidensaul stated that the bird "was described to me as a magnificent, but with a curved bill - which strongly suggested green violet-ear, but there were no photos or other observations." Deb Grove stated that "several members of the State College bird club sat and sat, hoping to see it, [but] it never showed up again." (PABIRDS)

banded by Scott W. 11/25/05 - FO ~9/15/05 ↔ LO 12/15/05*

An adult female Rufous was observed at the home of Liz Zehring near Lebanon during mid-September. The bird stayed late into November, and was banded by Scott Weidensaul on 11/25/05, the day after Thanksgiving. The bird was last seen (the first time) at approximately 1 PM on 11/27/05. After a hiatus of four days, a hummer which was banded reappeared and was last seen 12/15/05. (pers. comm. LZ) This interlude, of course, raises the intriguing possibility that a different bird took up residence for the first 2 weeks of December at this location although LZ feels it was the same bird!
